At the top, we have Alfred Farag again, and is that Gaber Asfour? Below, it’s Osama el-Baz and, I think, Samir Sirhan…
Alfred Farag at the Louis Awad Conference (1990)
This one I’m sure of. This is Alfred Farag.
A Series of Photos Related to Luwīs ʿAwaḍ (Louis Awad)
I need help with some of these! These first photos come from the book Luwīs ʿAwaḍ: mufakkiran.. wa-nāqidan.. wa-mubdiʿan (al-Qāhirah: al-Hayʾah al-Miṣriyyah al-ʿĀmmah li-l-Kitāb, 1990), which includes several contributions from Egyptian literary and cultural luminaries who were friends, acquaintances, or students of Awad at some point. It’s a veritable who’s-who of the Egyptian cultural scene at the time (if testosterone heavy). It’s also interesting because the participants in the conference that the contributions come from (a celebration of Awad’s life after he passed away in September of that year) try to do several things. Some of them seem keen on sidelining his Marxist tendencies, with many of them mentioning that he was more of a “democratic socialist” or a “liberal” than a Marxist. To me, this could be the result of many of the participants having been co-opted at some point by the Mubarak regime, and this redefinition of Awad’s politics would then be meant to make him more palatable to the political elite. At the same time, it might further ingratiate participants like Usāmah al-Bāz or Gābir ʿAṣfūr to Mubarak himself, as they both worked closely with him during their careers.
What I need help with, though, is identifying people I am having trouble making out in the photos. I am fairly sure of several of the participants (I mean, I do have a list of names!), but some I am not so sure about. So, I was thinking we might use the internet to figure it out. I’ll list the names here, and the one’s I’m sure of or guessing about in the photos to come.
